Alright, this actually came out last year. Anyway, it’s the first of the 4-EP collection (named after the four seasons) released by Jon Foreman. I only managed to get those thirty seconds preview of the songs on iTunes. If you like the acoustic sound or Alexi Murdoch, than it’s probably for you. The last track is also used for this movie called Bella (2007).

The Last Post… Storytelling Will Be Back

Okay, I admit I’m one post too late. But the other one is too early (beacuse I know many people just wait till the last minute to blog)! So I’ll just combine last week’s post with this week one together.

Last week was kind of slack; watched “Eat Wind” and listened to the lecture blah. Jiabing actually copied notes! The ones below are form her blog. Thou shall not plagiarise, so I’ll cite! Lim, J.B. - Fixed eye.
- Characters are there and they’re developed (things happening around him or happens to him?)
- Chainsaw is our friend
- Too lengthy? Not enough?
– Let readers crave for more rather than crave to end.
- “where do my scenes begin? Where do they end?”
- More happenings than describing the person.
- Naggy dialogues?
- show but not tell. (tell someone about the accident or talk about the accident)
- Interesting enough? (high stakes/more to lose)
- matter enough? make the audience feel for the characters.
- torture your characters!

I’ve also recieved the many feedbacks for my draft. What I got was sick, strange and all-those-pscho-would-do kind of comments. Jeez, I was so freakin worried (and still am)! Before writing this post, I saw this one new comment from someone on the 50 words stories page. His story made me laugh and boost my post-writing spirit:

Mummy, what is pesticide for?” Little Johnny asks.
“To kill pests,” she replies to the keen learner.
The next day, Johnny brings a can of pesticide to school and sprays it on Tim when he starts talking to Little Jane.
“Stay away from her, you pest!” Johnny shouts at Tim

“Leon” is a good movie. I like the part when leon dies (not in a sadistic kind of way) – like how his vision goes bright as he fell to he ground. I managed to watch “Taxi Driver” too. The way they speak is so funny, like ‘I’m going to boogie” which is what I’m going to do soon.

I hate saying that this would probably be the last post in this blog. Storytelling on. \__/ (Don’t go like “whatever”).

I heard that after a few more weeks, we’ll move on to storyboarding. I prefer drawing to writing, so… Yay! But I’ll miss this blogging thing though.

The test was so horrible. I memorised the ‘elements of dialogue’ part but confused it with some writing blah. Jeez. The last question we did really made Gui Li confused…

The class also recieved the writer’s bible. And we later watched 3 feet apart. That’s all I can remember.

Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire

Whoa. The class had to write a true or false story. Lesson learnt – I’m good at guessing. Teehee. Apart from that, we can twist and turn the endings to provide a more exciting plot. Our memory and experience can also be used as reference. When we’re having in-class writing, my mind just went still like stagnant water. Why, why?! It happens everytime. Any tips on ‘getting started’?

We watched another short film called autographbook. Reminds me so much about primary school. Especially the “poems” section… Bird fly high, hard to catch. Friends like you, hard to find! Man, it sounds hilarious.

There’s a coming test! I shall declare my love for 3D art because there’s none of that crap! Oops.

Action Speaks Louder Than Words

New learning point from class: The character(s) is better off doing more actions, rather than talking. Now I have to teach my imaginery people how to shut up. And be like Keanu Reeves running around. Maybe putting them in a HDB setting…

Another learning point taken is that the audience are not dumb asses. However, what the writ comm lecturer said about Oprah’s show dumbing them down makes me wonder if we are really that smart after all.

Stories can come from our memory as well. They can be partly fake and made-up though. I really like the two short films we watched, especially The Secret Heaven. I can so relate to it – I used to get beaten on the fingers during piano lessons. But I managed to quit before my PSLE. After seven years of torture!

I have no idea what the schematized thing is all about. It only left me with this impression of three circular diagrams intersecting each other. If I’m not wrong, we are going to get a copy of it next week.

Arisa bought her polaroid! It’s quite amusing to see the picture forming. Most of us were going “oh” and “ah”.

Lesson three was more about building up the characters in the stories. To start off, the class had to randomly choose an address and post it under the people watch page. Most of us were like “what”?! I thought Leslie was crazy. Haha.

There’s so many ways we can reveal the subjects’ background (or should I say interior) – Scenes from an interview, writing a diary, or just flashbacks. Before watching the Taxi Driver and Three Kings clips, I thought that only flashbacks work. Need to observe more films rather than appreciate them…

The characters must also have motives and wants. Not forgetting secrets which adds flavour to the story. Check this site out: Post Secret. Maybe someone can draw his inspiration from there.

Yep, that’s all. Time to crack my brain to send some creative juices flowing for five 50 words compositions.

Conversing… In Words

I thought getting the openers right would be tough. I was wrong. Bwhahaha. Our perceptions on them also play a part on how the story will go and end. So soc psy-ish.

What left me with the deepest impression from the second lesson was “using dialogues appropriately”. We cannot pen them down anyhow. No repeating what the reader can see for themselves, revealing the characters’ personalities and relations etc.

The class also watch two short films at the end of the tutorial – “Ah ma” and “Shh”. I can hear Gui Li sobbing through the first one. Heehee. I admit it’s touching but somehow showcased in the wrong atmosphere. Must be all the laughing from the guys… And I dislike the second one. Kind of racist… Or did I depict the animation wrongly?

Last but not least, one of the bunny Leslie has looks like mine! But he died already (don’t laugh hor).

Yep, that’s all. People watching is fun. All the good looking people beware… Amelia and Arisa always go REALLY crazy over cute guys. It makes the rest of us laugh so hard.

A Rehash Of Primary School English?

I’m over with creative journals and functional writing and yet, I’m repeating it over again. But this time round, the stories have to have “strong verbs” and to be in a “third person” format. Sounds more difficult. Languages are never my forte.

Profanity is allowed in our writings! It’s something new here. I think it makes the class far more interesting, because we are not being restricted. Bwhaha.

I will not impose any self-doubt. Because I always do. And it prevents me from doing my best. So I will declare that I can write.
